Hi, I'm Julia
At Shades and Shapes Hair Studio everything I do is a collaboration. Everyone sees hair differently and it's my job to understand your vision as closely as possible. I ask a lot of questions, especially at the first appointment. I want you to love your hair so first I need to know what your preferences are. Together we talk through your options before I pick the right techniques to create your perfect hairstyle.

I've been a hairstylist since 2010. I spent the first 15 years of my career working on Newbury Street in Boston. In the spring of 2025 I moved my business to the suburbs so I can enjoy more time with my family and friends. I grew up in Massachusetts and have been lucky to maintain many close relationships.
My husband and I bought a fixer upper house in 2022 that we take pride in restoring, so we always have a reno project going. I also enjoy cooking, reading, playing computer games, and taking my daughter on walks

What I Do Differently
Single Booking
My standard appointments are reserved for one guest only
Stain Removal
Nobody wants to walk around with hair color stains on their skin. I take pride in preventing and removing color stains effectively so you can get back to your busy schedule without interruptions.
Quicker Color Processing
I use a steamer to process many of my colors, especially traditional gray coverage. This brings processing time down to 20 minutes, and helps to prevent color fading between appointments
Gray Blending
Gray coverage has evolved in recent years and many clients now want to blend or camouflage their gray hairs. I know multiple ways to create a gray blend depending on your desired color and percentage of gray
Multi-Tonal Highlights
Not everyone wants to be the blondest blonde. I often use two different formulas in my foil appointments to create warmth and softness, or to maintain a brunette overall look with some brighter pops
